** Classes are all suspended :'(
To be an Associate, we need to pass the exam. To pass the exam, we need to know the syllabus (pdf file).
The Associate syllabus content starts from page 10.
The candidate needs to demonstrate several dances (as shown below).
Then, the candidate will be asked too explain the Dances ( of course chosen by the Examiner), and also elaborate the teaching technique.
Also musical knowledge (like accent, beats and bars, counts...), dance terminology (like alignment, centre and balance, CBM and CNMP...), steps and actions (like shuffles, sugarfoot, jazz square, vine...), arms ms body movements (like body wave, hip roll, clap, snap...) will be asked to be explained and demonstrated as well.
Since passing the exam means to be an qualified and eligible dance teacher, in addition to the dance and musical knowledge, knowledge of dance industry is also expected. I would like to highlight this part, because most people who take this exam are not yet in the industry, this part would become the weakest point. The most important thing is to remember 'Safety', 'Legal Registration and Licence', 'Third Party Insurance', then all others are common sense.
Line dances are in general solo dancing without a partner, however, in the exam the Mixer and Partner Dances, as well as the Western Freestyle Couple Dances would be included too. So the 11 partner positions, partnered dance terms (like arch, pin and cups...), foot positions in relation to room alignment would be part of the syllabus. Furthermore, the candidate will need to demonstrate a Mixer dance, a Partner dance, plus a Freestyle (a total of three). Therefore, it is better to get a partner to practice with before the exam.
Before the end of exam, there is a 'sight-read' and a class demo. Reading a dance script which is randomly chosen, and conduct a small class.
Viola! The last thing to do is to wait for the certificate!
