Wedding Dance Ideas (part 3- surprising dances)

Alright, we have talked about the normally sweet and nice wedding dances, but I am sure some of you are very unconventional and perhaps a surprise is what you aim for. In this case, apart from a romantic first dance, you may like to have a hot line dance like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever together with your best man/maid of honour, groomsmen/bridesmaids. Ar, or a Roc-n-roll routine for Father & Daughter dance / Mother & Son dance?

Or you would like to hire a professional team to do a dance performance, it's like you hire a band to play the music. But I don't think it is popular in Hong Kong, for all the wedding performance I have done, none a couple is Hong Kong local. Some tango lovers may like to dance a nice Tango that presents their love story. Or a Samba or Lambada at a beach wedding!

However, the most amazing dance would be one that involves the guests. Some couples would hire a dance coach and his/her team not only for a dance performance but also make it one of the wedding 'games' when coach and performers drag the crowd onto the floor and teach a quick dance to the crowd. In fact, I myself had been hired to do such coaching quite a few times. It's fun and surprisingly, it is not as expensive as imagine.

Wedding Dance Ideas (part 2- what affects your choice of dance styles)

internet source: wedding dance

Of course there will be much fewer choice for completely newbies than the experienced ten dances couples. But here, we are technical free, let's say you plan it a year ahead, you will no longer be a novice. So what are our concerns when to comes to choosing a dance style?

First thing first, the song! A dance is danced to express ourselves and to present the music. Normally couples choose their song before choosing their dance, as their have the say on song and leave choreographing to us the dance teachers.

Also your venue size and shape may affect your choice. A small place can only do spot dance, while a grand hall doesn't go well without progressing all around. All ballroom dances are progressive dances; however, it doesn't mean that you can only choose ballroom but no Latin dances if you have a big floor. Latin dances though mostly non-progressive, they can be a moving dance if the floor allows.

Theme of your day is another concern because as I said in Part 1, some dances just do not fit a grand hall banquet, some dances look weird in a garden setting. So you really need to think things thoroughly before you decide to have a beach wedding.

Ar, the style of your dress. This is one that most people tend to look over. The style and cutting of your dress definitely affect how your dance will look. You know what I mean of your imagine couple wearing ballroom gown doing Samba- will inevitably be clumsy; or Latin dance costume goes on a Waltzing couple- just look awkward.

Last but not the least, your personal style. Some people can move their hips freely, but can't hold a decent frame, while some can have nice and well-controlled footwork but not a hit rhythm. As long as you both feel comfortable and enjoyed, that particular dance style should be your style.

Wedding Dance Ideas (part 1- what not to choose)

internet source: wedding dance
If you have read thoroughly my Wedding Dance page, you will find that there are a few dance I do not include in my standard package, and there are only two dances to choose from the SuperEasy package (click here for a summary of both). It is easier to understand that some dances are more technical than the others, but why for people who are ready to take a regular class for a year, there are still dances not fit for them?

First of all, I never mean to say an absolute NO to some particular dances, the ones that are not listed could still be taught upon request as long as you think that is the best for you. However, as a trained teacher, I personally do not recommend dances like Paso Doble, Ballroom Tango, Argentine Tango, International Jive, Polka, and Lambada. It is not because I could not teach these dances (well, even if I myself cannot, I have teachers to teach!), but because of the suitability. Ordinary weddings are usually sweet and romantic which do not fit these styles (check the full list of dance styles here), but if you want surprises in hen parties, or you want an entertaining good show on the big day, go to part 3.

Let's look into the Paso Doble. It is in fact my favourite Latin dance. However, it is hard to master not because of the footwork, but the shape. You need to imagine yourselves a cape, a bull or a matador. Really? This is your wedding!

Then Ballroom Tango, it is a nice dance filled with tension and uncertainty. It is like attack and withdraw, attack attack and withdraw. Its love is too hot to touch, its hate is too dangerous to face. But shouldn't a wedding dance be sweet?

The Argentine Tango is sexy, very sexy and intimate. It is seductive because it was originated in brothels, it was danced by the prostitutes and their customers. But a bride is a bride, a bride is a princess, a queen, a star, an affection for the bridegroom. This dance may be nice to dance privately in the room but showcase to the relatives and friends? Unless you are professional Tango teachers.

International Jive is an energetic and lively dance. Somehow it is too sassy to dance in most wedding. Can you imagine a bride wearing floor length gown jumping like a bug ad get sweating like a hog? Maybe it is better to have it in a crazy hen party?

Polka is actually a happy dance, I would not say it is absolutely not suitable for wedding, it is in fact a dance for peasants to dance at all celebrations include wedding. Considering the music style, it is better to dance at a garden, a barn or something country, which are not quite available in HK. BUT, the footwork is
Q.Step compatible! If you can pick the correct music, it will look grand at an elegant wedding.

Lastly the forbidden dance Lambada (well if you read dance style blog entries you'll know it is not) is a hot dance that requires you to swing you hips all the time, plus that the unique footwork is not so friendly to most people. What makes it worse to be a wedding dance is that is that the dance basically forms by a lot of grinding and thrusting. Such a dance should be great fun in carnivals!

Now you know what not to choose, let's check what factors affect the choice of dance styles in part 2
As mentioned before, a normal wedding may not need special unexpected but of you want surprise, go straight to part 3.
