If you have read
thoroughly my
Wedding Dance page, you will find that there are a few
dance I do not include in my standard package, and there are only two
dances to choose from the SuperEasy package (
click here for a summary of both). It is easier to understand that some dances are more
technical than the others, but why for people who are ready to take a
regular class for a year, there are still dances not fit for them?
First of all, I never
mean to say an absolute NO to some particular dances, the ones that
are not listed could still be taught upon request as long as you
think that is the best for you. However, as a trained teacher, I
personally do not recommend dances like Paso Doble, Ballroom Tango,
Argentine Tango, International Jive, Polka, and Lambada. It is not
because I could not teach these dances (well, even if I myself cannot, I
have teachers to teach!), but because of the suitability. Ordinary
weddings are usually sweet and romantic which do not fit these
styles (
check the full list of dance styles here), but if you want surprises in hen parties, or you want an entertaining
good show on the big day, go to part 3.
Let's look into the
Paso Doble. It is in fact my favourite Latin dance. However, it is
hard to master not because of the footwork, but the shape. You need
to imagine yourselves a cape, a bull or a matador. Really? This is
your wedding!
Then
Ballroom Tango, it
is a nice dance filled with tension and uncertainty. It is like
attack and withdraw, attack attack and withdraw. Its love is too hot
to touch, its hate is too dangerous to face. But shouldn't a wedding
dance be sweet?
The
Argentine Tango is
sexy, very sexy and intimate. It is seductive because it was
originated in brothels, it was danced by the prostitutes and their
customers. But a bride is a bride, a bride is a princess, a queen, a
star, an affection for the bridegroom. This dance may be nice to
dance privately in the room but showcase to the relatives and
friends? Unless you are professional Tango teachers.
International Jive is
an energetic and lively dance. Somehow it is too sassy to dance in
most wedding. Can you imagine a bride wearing floor length gown
jumping like a bug ad get sweating like a hog? Maybe it is better to
have it in a crazy hen party?
Polka is actually a
happy dance, I would not say it is absolutely not suitable for
wedding, it is in fact a dance for peasants to dance at all
celebrations include wedding. Considering the music style, it is
better to dance at a garden, a barn or something country, which are not quite available in HK. BUT, the footwork is
Q.Step compatible! If you can pick the correct music, it will look grand at an elegant wedding.
Lastly the forbidden
dance
Lambada (well if you read dance style blog entries you'll know
it is not) is a hot dance that requires you to swing you hips all the
time, plus that the unique footwork is not so friendly to most
people. What makes it worse to be a wedding dance is that is that the
dance basically forms by a lot of grinding and thrusting. Such a
dance should be great fun in carnivals!
Now you know what not
to choose, let's check what factors affect the choice
of dance styles in part 2.
As mentioned before, a
normal wedding may not need special unexpected but of you want
surprise, go straight to part 3.
