The question being asked from last time- Does it give you some insights?
Professional Dance Teachers of International Style do not rely on the social media to promote. Rather opposite to what I had read on those Tips sites, teachers do not buy the idea of publishing class videos. My own instructor had told me not to shoot his teaching, the practice dance with him should not be exposed, and he gave a reason: he was giving a class so naturally he needed to stop from time to time, demonstrating concessionary positions to beginners and always a few beats below as the beginners could not catch up with the music, thus the overall look was not his best. However, professional teachers always want to keep their professipnal image.
So if I don't shoot the teacher, just the students? No for the adult classes, as most of them do not have a sound technical base, videos of their dancing do not appeal, the worse could be that potential students saw their immature dancing and decided not to join. No for the kids classes, as most of them are just coming for fun and not taking dancing really seriously. When I taped them they would crowded around me and make funny faces or even try to grab my camera to shoot me. Trust me, this was true, I tried it. No for the toddlers classes, as I was already busy keeping them in order, stopping them from screaming and running around, I did not see a point to video the mess of the class. Well, when they have been coming for a year or so, and start to get a better sense of dancing, quite good idea maybe- but at that time you should probably establishing the classes quite well. So sorry, this is not a good approach when you are just about to start your dance career.
Does it mean that no video at all? Well, not really. Videos are welcome when it is a public performance or a competition, as this is the time s/he will give the best. Absolutely make sense for me as video should be a tool to attract more students, only good shows can work the magic. However, same point here- when you can have a class to perform, that means you are already quite accomplished in what you are doing. So, this is just not working when you are at the initial stage.
Well, maybe you doubt it. But I can absolutely tell you that this is true and that, this does not only apply to the International Style classes, but also true in local hip hop classes- the son of one of my dance peer is currently learning Hip Hop in a local dance studio, the teacher had told them not to video in classes, practice video should not go public, and everytime when they have classes curtains MUST BE drawn.
You may wonder, if no one gets to see the teacher's dancing without joining class, how can we be sure that you are going to engage with a true pro. Good point! Let’s talk about the promotional events, next time.
