Ballroom Standard Dances seem to be very formal, and not having many advanced of variations, however, it is not true. Although I can't deny that during serious competitions, when open positions and other positions are not allowed, there are limited figure so we can do, this is not the whole truth of Ballroom Standard Dances.
While we are limited to a fixed number of figures, the limitation did not necessarily make the dances boring, instead, by the jointly effort of the dancers' wonderful musicality and excellent technique, and great art of a choreographer, the dances can still be very spectacular.
Every dancer has been a beginner once. Do you still remember how did you dance the Natural Turn? You simply drew the triangle with your feet and that was done. If you compare how you danced the Natural Turn on your first day of dancing and how you do it now after a reasonable time of training. Do you see the difference?
The Waltz, to a non-dancer, is simply known as the 1-2-3 and every step has a weight change. So a complete beginner will just walk the step and make a quarter turn after 3 steps. It is indeed very simple.
But would that make a watchable dance? Certainly not.
Even the beginner him/herself can tell it is far from good-looking. But they make all the step correctly! Why is there a difference?
We need to remember that dancing is not only about the footsteps. It is the presentation of the music, it is the presentation of your feeling. And how you present the music and how you present your feeling is in fact what we called the technique- it is the sway and swing, it is the rise and fall, it is the musicality, it is the frame, it is the connection.
