The First Step to Vine

The Grapevine is a very popularly known pattern, that almost all dancers (of all kinds of dance styles) can do.

However, there are some misconceptions about this figure.

First of all, it is a three step pattern that takes three beats.

A lot of How-to video teaching the Vine as a four-beat pattern, frankly speaking, in order to fit four beat songs (which is the super popular time signature for pop songs) the Vine is usually danced as an Extended Vine.

Reading the description of Grapevine on the syllabus, it is a pattern that travel towards either side.

To make sure the dancer can be able to end on the same line, the first step to entre needs to be side and slightly behind.

Therefore the description of "side, cross behind, side" is actually "side and towards front, cross, side".

If the first step goes straight to the side, then after the cross step and side step, the dancer will shift forward.

If the pattern is danced as a Stroll Weave, which can be kept continuing forever, in order to maintain the dancer to travel along one straight line, each time the side step needs to shift either front or back.
