Dance Teacher is a job, and the income may not be guaranteed. If the teacher strictly demands every tiny bit of details without realizing learners' individual expectations and limitations, then this teacher will not only be considered unprofessional but also scare off students away thus he won't be earning enough for subsistence.
Also, I am totally okay that learners not trying every last bit of their effort in order to acquire the skills. Many dance for fun, or for meeting up. Not everyone is a keen amateur, not everyone wants to be a professional competitor. Let's face the truth, most 'dancers' think themselves good enough, and most don't have the potential to go further their existing level. Just for a relaxing pastime, dancing itself shouldn't be a stress.
I had been in both the relaxing social dance class and genuine training class. I didn't expect to learn much about technical points in the former, I primarily hoped to see how different teachers varied the figures to create their own amalgamation. But of course, if the teacher demonstrated the figures nice enough, I would consider trying the private lessons for technical points.
Oh yes, that's my point. I didn't see my social dance teacher dance. Only very occasionally he 'danced', and most of the time he was like putting the whole foot in the place with some robotic counting. I understand how tiring it is to be a full time dance teacher, owning the school with an ugly mortgage, plus teaching 6 hours a day, and some extra work like adjudicating competitions, organizing dance parties, coaching the wedding couples, occasional performance requests... Probably not able to keep the zeal every second, especially at the time when my class was instructed- that's the very last on the daily schedule.
Anyway, I mean it is nice to have social dancing just for fun. However, when it comes the teachers' training course, 'easiness' is absolutely unacceptable. Properly dancing is more a sport (that's why it is also known as dancesport), we need to know the details in order not to get hurt, even though you are not going to coach competition dancers, it is still important to teach the students, whoever they could be, the correct things, because I believe it is the obligation for teachers (we are licensed!) to make sure students can really dance and not getting hurt.
So you see, my point is, it is important to know what you want before you sign up a class, choose your class carefully, and also carefully choose the instructor. I mean, there are teachers but not all can satisfy you.
