Enquiries come everyday, many of them are complete beginners, and of course some are experienced.
As an instructor, I have no preference. Complete beginners are less demanding, I like to break and re-organise simple figures into different partner positions, so the new learners can only learn one figure, and perform the one and only one figure in closed position, in contact position, in wrap position, in lock position, in left side position, in right side position, in Promenade position, in skater position…
On the other hand, experienced dancers in general expect more. I can design something more technical, and design a more complicated choreography. Purely being a choreographer teaching experienced dancers would give more sense of achievement.
However, when you are talking about a figure that you want the couple to do in a particular way, the students come say, ‘ar… but my previous teacher said this should not be done in this way. she said blah blah blah…’
Oh Jesus! A figure can be done in different ways, and in addition, in order to fit for the theme of the whole performance, we may migrate moves from different dance styles.
Can’t imagine? Just watch DWTS, how many syllabus l figures can you identify?
Aiya, I am actually fine to teach experienced ones, just one thing, I hope both of us can have an open mind to accept newly arranged moves, for the shows.
