The components of timing include beat, tempo, rhythm and pace.
Beat is an easily understood concept as it is already well defined. Beat is the basic unit that forms a bar, it is a regularly repeated pulse that underline a musical pattern, there could be accented or inaccrnted beats.
The pace of the beats is the Tempo. The tempo also gives a rough idea of what dance style the song fits.
Beats are also one of the elements of a rhythm which is a more complicated concept. Rhythm is often confused with melody, however rhythm can exist without a melody while melody can't exist without rhythm.
Rhythm can be understood as a basic pattern of stresses placed on certain beats within a bar (thus knowing the rhythm is very important for percussion, but underlooking the importance of rhythm will destruct your music). Melody on the other hand is pitch and rhythm. It is more the high and low of sounds.
Once we have beats and tempo and rhythm, together with a melody, then we need to pace the music- how and what to change of the elements over time. Simoly put, it is how fast or how slow you deliver the music. In dancing it could be the way we interpret the music using our body.
Ar... Now you have the time of your dance.
