More than the Vine

Vine, a very popularly used action in Line Dancing, is not a 4-beat step!

There is a common misunderstanding that vine step or grapevine step is a 4-beat step, but actually no, only three beats!

The regular description is side, cross back (can also be cross front), side. Obviously the Vine is counted as one two three.

Based on the Vine, we can develop the extended vine. It is danced by adding an extra step after the third step of the regular vine. The additional step can be a tap, a stomp, a step, a hitch, a closing step with a turn... or any one beat step.

The extended vine can also be extended to fill a longer phrase as a weave or a zig zag, starting with a cross front, side, cross back, side... by repeating the above steps one can dance continually forever!

However, normally in social dancing, it is pointless to keep continually dancing one single step.

Mentioned above are the variations of the basic vine towards either sides. There is another variation which can also be travelling to either side for long phrases, the difference is a turn. It is called rolling vine.

A rolling vine incorporates a turn or more throughout the entire step pattern. I usually danced with a quarter turn on the fourth step, and then start to do a series of half turns.
