I believe all learners attending classes in professional dance studio should have been told that warm-up exercising is very important. But why?
As we know, certified dance trainers study basic anatomy during their dance teachers' training class. The functions and the interaction of the four systems (the skeletal system, the muscular system, the cardiovascular system, and the nervous system) can explain everything.
The simplest description of the four systems:
The skeletal system- it's the framework of the body.
The muscular system- muscle contracts and creates movements.
The cardiovascular system- a healthy heart pumps blood around the body, and the blood that carries oxygen is delivered to lungs for exhalation.
The nervous system- brain instructs movements, in turn the movements stimulate the central nervous system, and it finally help develop a faster reaction.
Warming up exercise is important when the body is warmed up, the raised body temperature let's faster blood flow. Now apply the above description of cardiovascular system, we can give a simple conclusion that it gives a better heart, and better lungs.
After warming up, the body is adjusted to an optimum condition which is good for the real exercising, and in turn helps prevent injury.
Secondly, the blood is not only delivered to the heart and lungs, it also flows around the body, i.e. muscles. As mentioned above, muscles contracts can create movements; now the muscles get fresh blood, as the body is warmed up, the warmed muscles contracts easier. Apart from this, the warmed body produces lubricant around joints, and then joints are loosen up, thus movements are easier and the body is in general more flexible.
Again, the body is then adjusted to an optimum condition which is good for the real exercising, and in turn helps prevent injury.
Thirdly, the blood flows around the body, it does not only mean the muscles, the heart and the lungs, but also the brain. Think about the mentioned description of the nervous system- movements stimulate the central nervous system (CNS). Frequent and regular stimulation helps develop a well-coordinated and fast reacting nervous system.
Again, the body is then adjusted to an optimum condition which is good for the real exercising, and in turn helps prevent injury.
Ar, it looks like the skeletal system is missed. But no!
We have to remember one thing, the contracting and releasing of muscles creates movements, but it only works when the muscles are attached properly onto healthy bones. If there is no bones, the human body can't even stand!
Another thing, exercise can increase bone density. Even simple movements like stepping and walking can help increase bone density!
Therefore, we can draw a conclusion that a healthy skeletal system enables the other three systems function properly.
