This guest teacher gave a very nice lecture, we were shown how to break a complicate figure into basics, and then re-create an 'original' competition figure. The lecture had been very informative but also very inspiring. We learned the history of Jive, and how figures developed, reformed and now share with its antecedents.
Among all, we focused on those relating to Boogie-Woogie and RnR. We got to watch the videos of International Championship 2003-2013, paused at every figure contemplating their shapes and forms and how they were affected by the contemporary dances. It's good to know the changes of style over years, however, I totally agree with guru A.Moore that boogie-woogie had been the ugliest thing ever seen. I later told Kenny that those BW could only be in 'cheap shows', and I was so grateful that jive had been developed into its present elegant and lively form. Even so, jive is still my least favourite among the five standardized Latin dances. He giggled and told me jive became his least favourite since the time he found himself not young enough to beat the beat. D'op.
As I don't really like jive, I didn't devote much time to it, well, just enough to help me pass the degree. I could jive the 6 beats jive, and nothing about the 8 beats jive. I showed my jive to him and we discussed about some figures in details. Well at the end of the day, he commented on my dancing which I thought was very flattering, it also reminded me how WY from BDC and KJ & Juliana from CDA commented my dancing. A little thrill, a lot of uneasiness. The current technique and knowledge I have is what I deserve. I am not talented but I am diligent (proud to say so), the currently not good enough level of skills has been the result of countless practices. I will be happy to hear your “you dance well” but please don't say “you are clever”. I am not, I just want to be beautiful, and I want Kiwi to find some good qualities in me- at least I never say I can't.
BTW, Kiwi enters the HK Open, competing this Saturday. I hope he will dance well.
