Generally, everyone likes watching dancing. And mostly, people watch how the ladies flaunt and pay little attention on the leader. So what does the man do on the floor?
Dance requires you focus, so dancers' minds wander less during the dances. To keep time, one mentally counts the beats of the music as moving feet in rhythmic ways, while trying to focus on memorizing the basic steps, recalling variations, making combination or longer sequences. Leading requires thinking ahead to plan what to do next. In a practice setting, all couples are doing the same, however, once the dancers hit the real dance floor where couples are doing their own routines at the same time. This means that the leader has to be alert and constantly surveying where other couples are located and anticipate (by spontaneously adjusting the choice of variations) to avoid potential collisions on the dance floor.
Man, it's really not easy to be a man on the floor. These days, we can find only a handful of man who can dance- which means he can lead in the way that the lady feels comfortable. It is always true that cool moves make a couple shine on the floor, however, cool moves with poor lead will definitely achieve the opposite, and this is what we would not like to see. In terms of social dancing, cool moves in fact might not be that important, what is the most important in terms of social dancing has always been making the lady feel comfortable. Unless you dance only competition dances, leading you partner to the cool moves is hard, as the majority of people do not intend to do complicated footwork and do not demonstrate a flexibility to perform high quality movements. So in short, what a man should do is to lead; to lead, man should signal clearly with his whole frame which the lady is dancing in; to signal, man should have firm support on himself so as to pass the message onto the lady through his own bodily movements. Wow, it sounds so easy, but actually it's easier said than done.
