In order to maintain an elegant shape, we are told to keep pointing and stretching feet even when we leap or jump.
In Latin dancing, ladies never need to leap or jump or hop on their own. Any kinds of aerial moves are supported by men.
During taking off, we would like our ladies to tip our toes, however, bear in mind that tipping toes doesn't mean to lift and land by toes, but balls of the feet. It's only when the lady is in the air the toes are stretched.
Landing technique is the reverse. Once the toes touch the ground, the weight needs to be shifted to the balls of the feet.
Never try to dance on 'toes' even you are not doing aerials. Ballerinas wearing pointed shoes are trained to stand on their toes, but we are not. We have high heels. The weight distributions of different dance genres are different!
The grand image in Latin dancing is not created by stretching your toes, but the hip movements!
