Use the Heart to ... (part 2)- Teach

Kandykane

Oh yes, in my last blog entry, I said we need to use the heart to listen to the music so as to make a touching dance. Today, I need to tell the truth that I don't do it in class- I don't use the heart to listen to the music, and I don't usually express the music.

Well, but I do use my heart, I use my heart to count the beats, and focus mainly on student's footwork. Even though expression is necessary for a good dancer, and that expressing is our born talent, it is not easier for learners to collect their limbs and at the same time freely using them to express. As I always say, most learners struggle with footwork and balance. They don't even find their core, nor understand what is ribcage movements. And one thing I always bear in mind that, I can't demand working people to practice dancing every day just like me. So I need to repeat over and over again about weight and movement.

Therefore, in class I mostly use my heart to alert myself who is shifting weight at the wrong timing, or who is about to lose balance. Expressing the music is not plausible in class. A teacher has to focus on the technique, or else nothing is going to be achieved. For the teaching part, the only time I get to get to the music is the time I write the dance. I really listen to the music and get the feeling, and then I switch on the camera and try out some movements and actions without thinking too much. Revise the improvisation and add on some details, then film again dancing the written parts and add on some more improvisation. Repeatedly doing so I get a small routine done.

As a dancer and a dance teacher, I believe a sound and solid technical base is necessary for my students to express their feeling in the future.
