The term Bollywood was created by combining two names, Bombay (the city now called Mumbai) and Hollywood. It was primarily modelled on Indian dance styles, could be classical or folk style.
As it gained popularity through time, Bollywood dance is increasingly becoming a fusion of dances from all over the world. Bollywood based in Mumbai (Bombay), is India’s and the world’s largest film industry. In fact, it is too internationally ubiquitous that we can even find it in the Oxford English Dictionary!
Now when we mention Bollywood, most people will first conjure up the highly energetic and expressive dance form appears in dance movies.
Not only in Indian films, but also those from US, Canada and Europe. Very successful Bollywood movies like "Slumdog Millionaire" have taken the world by storm.
World stars like Madonna, Shakira & Britney Spears also incorporated the Bollywood style of dance or music into their songs, videos and stage shows.
Since its conquering, this East-West Fusion Dance Style have developed their own signature style of song and dance, which combines the rich texture of India’s many classical and folk dances (included the classical art forms of Kathak and Bharata Natyam), fused with elements of Jazz, Hip – Hop, Arabic and Latin Forms.
Now in modern Bollywood films, Bollywood Dance is influenced by Western culture, and incorporate many variations of Hip-Hop dance on the base of classical Bollywood Dance (such as Bharatnatyam and Kathak , and folk dances such as Bhangra). As we can see, the dance is now evolved into a cross-cultural dance.
