Getting to know the Line Dancing Actions and Steps (part 9)- that paddle and that pivot

kandykane dancing class

These two turns have been confusing for quite a while. Usually I do pivot turn in dancing, no matter Latin Dancing or Ballroom Dancing, or Line dancing, or even Hip Hop, until one day I needed to have the Associate Test, and I found myself stuck with the paddle.

Let's talk about the Pivot turn first (definition here). One needs to make a step in 5th position, and then turn accordingly, unless specified it is usually a 1/2 turn. According to the syllabus, it can also be 1/4 or 3/4 turn. When we call this figure, it is always "Step" and "Turn", that's how we get its other name "Step Turn".

If we look at the Pivot Turn in details, there is weight change: step the nominated foot forward and the weight is in the step, turn a half turn on the balls of both feet and send the weight to the original foot.

The Paddle Turn, on the other hand, has no weight changes. It is a turn made by using a series of ball changes with the weight staying over the turning foot.
