There are a few actions that leave the foot in the air, the Flick, the Kick and the Swing.
By definition, a Flick is a low kick taken from the knee; a Kick is a done when the leg is lifted from the hip and extended in the designated direction. However, in actual dancing, we usually forget the difference, even a "Kick" is marked in the dance sheet, we would dance a "Flick" instead. Or, we intentionally make Kicking action from the knee instead of the hip. It is because it would be much easier to action from the knee and in fact that would take short time to complete the action when we are rushing our footwork to catch up with music.
A Swing is done when the unweighted foot is raised and moved forward, it looks exactly the same as a Kick. However, a Swing can also be towards back, side or crosswise like a pendulum.
